Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines, importante transportista sueca, implementa el BI de Cognos

NOTA DE PRENSA COGNOS USA

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, May 4 — Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines, one of the world’s largest ocean carriers, transporting automotive vehicles and heavy equipment, has invested in a solution from Cognos, the world leader in enterprise business intelligence (EBI) and corporate performance management solutions.

The company has implemented the Cognos EBI solution with the aim of enhancing risk management and increasing the focus on net contribution throughout the organisation.

From its 80 offices worldwide, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines manages the transportation of 1.6 million vehicles by sea and 1.5 million vehicles by land every year. It needed a way to provide employees at all levels, regardless of geographical location, with accurate information about the volume, gross revenue, type of cargo, net contribution, profit coverage, port combinations, voyage and routes to help them make better decisions and increase efficiency as a result.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines chose Cognos following an evaluation of business intelligence suppliers and consultancy firms, based on the flexibility and user-friendliness of its solutions and their ability to tie into business processes and deliver information quickly.

«Before, we had a range of different systems with more than 2,000 reports and a variety of Excel spreadsheets. This made reporting slow and inflexible,» said manager Kristin Ulstein, yield management global at Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines Ocean division. «In addition, we had different definitions of cargo categories, which led to reporting discrepancies and we often wasted time on re-checking data. With Cognos EBI, we’re confident that we’ll be able to work more efficiently on providing background data for our tactical and strategic decision-making throughout the organisation.»

Cognos EBI forms part of a larger project called Net Contribution, which helps management analyse the yield of one category of cargo compared to another. The project involves translating data from business systems to a data warehouse to facilitate profitability and contribution analysis.

«Immediate and flexible access to information is crucial for operating an efficient logistics supply chain. EBI improves visibility across the organisation, which in turn helps drive profitability and maximise customer service. We’re delighted that Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines chose Cognos to help achieve its profitability goals,» said Paul Hoy, industry director for manufacturing at Cognos. «Removing the need to duplicate work, and offering the ability to drill down or view information transparently from many angles means users can make better decisions, which ultimately has an impact on the bottom line.»

«Any logistics firm knows how important it is to be able to transport goods efficiently to retain competitive advantage. Having the intelligence to make informed decisions, and the ability to identify trends certainly helps to achieve this,» he added.
