Analyzing rocks between 5 million and 150 million years old is challenging at best. Petrobras is looking to SAS to help employees manage large amounts of data and make better decisions about major projects.
“SAS Analytics has proven to be reliable in 100 percent of our cases. No other software on the market matches this performance,” said Olinto Gomes de Souza, Senior Geologist at Petrobras.
Using SAS, technicians create statistical models and analyze large volumes of data to increase the recovery factor, which is the percentage of oil resources in an oil field that is estimated to be recoverable. Their aim is to maximize the placement of wells and extend the life of mature fields to improve company profitability on projects such as onshore production. On average, such fields produced 230,000 barrels more per day after using SAS Analytics.
A SAS customer since 1999, Petrobras reached a daily production record of more than 2 million barrels a day in 2007. The company’s goal is to become one of the five largest integrated energy companies in the world by 2020.
“SAS is helping oil and gas companies around the world be more efficient with exploration and production,” said Alyssa Farrell, Product Marketing Manager for Energy at SAS. “Analytics helps them cost-effectively extract resources from conventional and unconventional assets, predict problems before they occur, and improve production from mature fields.”
