Global study shows market penetration of XML
XML established as basic technology

Darmstadt, Germany, March 17, 2003 Software AG announced the results of a global XML study at CeBIT 2003 XML is has caught on in many areas, and it is now considered to be one of the key technologies in modern and future-oriented IT strategies.
Dr. Bergmann Dr. Rohde & consulting group GmbH, which specializes in the IT and telecom industries, surveyed 461 enterprises in the United States, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and France in Q4 2002. The surveyed enterprises can be classified as follows: one-third of them are customers of Software AG that already use XML technologies, the remaining two-thirds were a random sampling of leading enterprises in the USA and Europe. Most of those interviewed came from public administration, finance, the media, and manufacturing.

Strong growth predicted for XML in 2004/2005
Forty percent of those surveyed have already actively implemented Software AG solutions. Fifty-six percent of all enterprises that have dealt closely with XML once are already planning their next XML project. An evaluation of the projects in the works shows that strong growth in XML-based installations can be expected in 2004/2005.
The study also showed that in 94 percent of the cases, IT decision-makers are the driving force behind the implementation of XML-based projects. Almost 50 percent of those surveyed, however, said that the management was also directly involved in the decision-making process.
Sixty-two percent of the enterprises that are not yet customers of Software AG indicated that they have not yet seriously contemplated the possibilities of XML technology. This is due to the enterprises lack of knowledge about and experience with XML technologies.

Various areas of implementation
Most enterprises implemented XML for integration tasks 33 percent of them for data exchange between applications and 31 percent for data exchange between enterprises. In addition, XML is implemented to create a uniform, standardized IT infrastructure and to accelerate business processes. Cost reduction plays more of an ancillary role when it comes to introducing XML.

Comparison of industries and countries
XML projects are most advanced in the USA, followed by Germany, the UK, and Spain. Italy and France are a different story. There, more than 86 percent of those surveyed were not yet aware of the advantages of XML, or they never got beyond an evaluation.
Of the industries surveyed, the finance sector is the one where XML is in most widespread use, followed by public administration, media and manufacturing. Strictly regimented industries, such as public administration, finance and health care are making a significant contribution to the spread of XML.

Andreas Zeitler, member of Software AGs board and responsible for sales and marketing, explains: Our enterprise has focused on XML for some time now, and has done some very successful pioneering work. Therefore we have a huge advantage over the competition in both experience and expertise when it comes to implementing XML-based IT projects. This benefits our clients. We provide them with efficient consulting services and innovative solutions that help them secure their competitive advantage.

Lothar Lasinski, Vice President of Corporate Marketing, has this to add: Our customers have this in common: Once they have experienced the advantages of XML in a concrete project, they use it again in the future. In order to fill in the knowledge gaps in IT departments, we train certified XML specialists at our XML Academy. Through this knowledge transfer, we are also attempting to reach those enterprises that do not yet use XML technology.
